I am trying to follow these instructions
Transfer the Schema Master Role
Click Start, click Run, type mmc in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the File, menu click Add/Remove Snap-in.
Click Add.
Click Active Directory Schema, click Add, click Close, and then click OK.
In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Change Domain Controller.
Click Specify Name, type the name of the domain controller that will be the new role holder, and then click OK.
In the console tree, right-click Active Directory Schema, and then click Operations Master.
Click Change.
Click OK to confirm that you want to transfer the role, and then click Close.

I get the error
The requested FSMO operation failed. The current FSMO holder could not be contacted. The transfer of the current
Operations Master could not be performed.

The original 2000 server is still up and running and is browseable.

Hi David,

Thanks for your posting here.

Please make sure that you point all your DCs to the same internal DNS when
you transfer the FSMO roles. You can also restart the NETLOGON service on
all the DCs to register the relate records.
